Basic requesting is a good place to start when introducing someone to communicating with AAC. However, requesting is only one of many reasons people communicate. This one-hour implementation class reviews how people use language to communicate and what you can do to help individuals get beyond basic requesting. Practical examples and materials will be used throughout the course.
Standardized tests don’t always tell the full story—especially for AAC users. This session equips SLPs with practical, real-world strategies for using informal evaluation measures to capture authentic communicative competence. Learn when to prioritize informal over formal assessment, explore a range of flexible, evidence-informed tools, and walk away with clear methods for translating informal data into meaningful, standards-aligned goals. Attendees will gain actionable approaches to better understand AAC users’ abilities and to design interventions that truly reflect their communication needs.
